Project Management Foundations: Teams is one of 10 courses in a LinkedIn Learning Path entitled Become a Project Manager. I have now completed 6 of the 10 courses. This learning opportunity is endorsed by the self-study group initiative at Boston PHP Meetup.
Course Details
Explore techniques for understanding the personality traits of team members, and for managing the development of teams. In Project Management Foundations: Teams you will investigate the value of knowing and understanding your team members. To this end you will review a number of assessments that can assist with identifying personality types, emotional intelligence, strengths, and work styles. In addition, your will also learn ways project managers can use these tools to relate to colleagues and create an environment in which everyone is able to succeed.
Topics Covered
The following assessments and approaches are reviewed in Discovering Project Work Styles:
- Myers-Briggs Type Indicator for project teams
- The DiSC personality profile
- Work style assessment
- StrengthsFinder assessment
- Emotional intelligence for project teams
- Tuckman Team-Development Model
- Situational project leadership
- Project change and transition management
- The Five Dysfunctions of a Team
- Manage projects in matrix organizations
Personal Assessments
I have personal experience with three of these approaches:
Situational project leadership — I am a fan of Ken Blanchard’s work on Situational Leadership as outlined in two of his books, Leadership and the One Minute Manager and Self Leadership and the One Minute Manager.
StrengthsFinder assessment — This approach is explored in detail in Strengths Based Leadership. I like having a personal Strengths Based Report I can share and discuss with direct reports and colleagues.
The Five Dysfunctions of a Team — I was less impressed with this Leadership Fable by Patrick Lencioni. Other reviewers found this work to be more valuable than I did.
